section 2 Helpful Hints
Plug Brewer into its own grounded outlet — If the electric circuit is overloaded with other appliances, your Brewer may not function properly. The Brewer should be operated on its own circuit, separate from other appliances.
Initial Cleansing Brew — Before you use your Brewer for the first time, perform an initial cleansing brew by running clean water through the brew cycle without using a K-Cup®portion pack.
One Cup at a Time — Your new Brewer makes one fresh beverage at a time. You’ll need to add fresh water each time you brew. Unlike other Keurig Brewers, the B31 does not store water in the reservoir.
The Right Water Makes a Difference — For the best tasting gourmet coffee, tea or hot cocoa, Keurig recommends using bottled or filtered water. We do not recommend using distilled or reverse osmosis water. Water quality varies from place to place. If you notice an undesirable taste in your cup of coffee such as chlorine or other mineral taste, we recommend you consider using bottled water or water from a filtration system.
Customize your Size, Flavor & Brew — With the choice of over 200 varieties of K-Cups and multiple fill levels, your Brewer gives you endless options to customize the size, flavor and strength that’s perfect for you. For a strong, intense cup, select an Extra Bold K-Cup (with up to 30% more ground coffee than regular varieties) and brew size that’s right for you. The less water you use, the more intense flavor in your cup. The more water you use, the less intense flavor in your cup.
To guide you, the Brewer includes a Water Level Guide located inside the Cold Water Reservoir. The Water Level Guide is removable to make cleaning easy.
Brewing into a tall mug — To brew into a tall mug, simply remove the Drip Tray Assembly and place the tall mug on the Drip Tray Base.
The Drip Tray — Any liquid overflow (from your cup or the Cold Water Reservoir) will be caught in the Drip Tray. Be sure to empty the Drip Tray when the red Drip Tray Overflow Indicator pops up. The Drip Tray has a snug fit to ensure it stays put in transit.
Automatic Shut Off — Your Brewer will shut off automatically when it is idle for longer than 90 seconds. Simply press the Power Button to restart.
Clean Your Brewer Regularly — To keep your Brewer looking and performing its best, be sure to clean the external and internal components on a regular basis. See page 12 for more information.
De-Scaling— Mineral content in water varies from place to place. Depending on the mineral content of the water in your area, calcium deposits or scale may build up in your Brewer. Scale is non-toxic, but left unattended, it can hinder Brewer performance. De-scaling your Brewer helps maintain the heating element and other internal parts of the Brewer that come in contact with water. See page 15 for more information.
Storing — When storing your Brewer, carefully empty the Drip Tray and make sure both the Cold Water Reservoir and Internal Hot Water Tank are empty. Store your Brewer upright in a safe, dry, frost-free environment. See page 14 for more information.

section 5 Cleaning & Maintenance
Cleaning External Parts
IMPORTANT: Make sure the Brewer is unplugged before cleaning.
Regular cleaning of the Brewer’s external components is recommended.
1.Never immerse the Brewer in water or other liquids. The Brewer housing and other external components should be cleaned with a damp, non-abrasive, lint-free cloth.
2.The Drip Tray and Drip Tray Plate should be periodically inspected and cleaned with a damp, non-abrasive, lint-free cloth. The Drip Tray and Drip Tray Plate should not be put into the dishwasher. To remove the Drip Tray,
simply slide it toward you. Remember, when the red Drip Tray Overfill Indicator appears, the Drip Tray is almost full. Carefully remove the Drip Tray and discard its contents.
The Drip Tray has a snug fit to ensure it stays put in transit.

Holder Assembly
1.Cleaning the Parts — The K-Cup Holder Assembly can be placed onto the top shelf of a dishwasher. NOTE: Use low temperature cycles in the dishwasher. To remove the K-Cup Holder Assembly from the Brewer, lift the Brewer Handle to open. Grasp the top of the K-Cup Holder with one hand. With the other hand, push up on the bottom of the K-Cup Holder until it releases (fig. 1). After cleaning, align the K-Cup Holder with the opening using the two front ribs as a guide, and snap into place from the top (fig. 2).
fig. 1 | fig. 2 |
2.Cleaning the Funnel — The Funnel can be removed from the K-Cup Holder by pulling on it until it snaps off (fig. 3). The Funnel can be placed on the top shelf of a dishwasher. NOTE: Use low
temperature cycles in the dishwasher. To replace the Funnel, just snap it back onto the K-Cup Holder Assembly.
3.Cleaning the Exit Needle — The Exit Needle is located on the inside bottom of the K-Cup Holder Assembly. Should a clog arise due to coffee grinds, it can be cleaned using a paper clip or similar tool. Remove K-Cup Holder Assembly and detach Funnel. Insert the paper clip (fig. 4) into the Exit Needle to loosen the clog and push it out. The K-Cup Holder can be placed on the top shelf of a dishwasher. NOTE: Use low temperature cycles in the dishwasher. The Entrance Needle does not require cleaning.

!
CAUTION: There are sharp needles that puncture the K-Cup above the K-Cup Holder and in the bottom of the K-Cup Holder. To avoid risk of injury, do not put your fingers in the K-Cup Assembly Housing.
NOTE: Over time, discoloration, spotting or staining may appear in the Cold Water Reservoir. This is normal and will vary depending on the mineral content of the bottled or filtered water used. This will not affect the operation of the Brewer. However, be sure to clean the Cold Water Reservoir regularly to minimize build-up (see page 14).
Section 5 Cleaning & Maintenance (continued)
Cleaning the Cold Water Reservoir
To access the Cold Water Reservoir, lift the Cold Water Reservoir Lid. Remove the Water Level Guide (fig. 5), then clean the inside of the reservoir with a damp, lint-free cloth as necessary (fig. 6). Replace the Water Level Guide and close the Cold Water Reservoir Lid when finished. NOTE: The Water Level Guide is not dishwasher safe.
fig. 5 | fig. 6 |
Emptying the Internal Hot Water Tank
1.Brewer must be powered off and plugged in.
2.Ensure that the Cold Water Reservoir Lid is closed.
3.Place a mug on the Drip Tray, then press and hold the BREW Button until all the water has been dispensed. NOTE: There will be a delay of 3– 4 seconds before water begins to dispense.
Storage
Empty the Internal Hot Water Tank and Cold Water Reservoir before storing. Ensure that you store your Brewer in a safe and frost-free environment, and in an upright position. Storing the Brewer in cold temperatures may cause condensation to freeze inside the Brewer and cause damage.
Before using your Brewer after storage, wipe the Cold Water Reservoir with a damp, lint-free cloth and run three cleansing brews without a K-Cup®portion pack. See page 8 for more information.
If your Brewer has been in an environment below freezing, allow the Brewer to rest at room temperature for at least 2 hours before powering on.
Storing the Power Cord
Behind the Brewer is a convenient compartment that will hold the
Power Cord (fig. 7). This makes the Brewer both easier to store and easier to take on the go.
fig. 7
De-Scaling Your Brewer
Depending on the mineral content of the water, calcium deposits or scale may build up in your Brewer. Scale is non-toxic but left unattended, it can hinder Brewer performance. De-scaling your Brewer helps maintain the heating element and other internal parts of the Brewer.
The Brewer should be de-scaled every 3-6 months to ensure optimal performance or when there are white deposits in the Cold Water Reservoir. It is possible for calcium deposits to build up faster, making it necessary to de-scale more often.
A. Prepare
You will need 20 oz. of undiluted white vinegar, a 12 oz. ceramic mug (do not use a paper cup) and access to a sink.
B. Fill and Clean
Step 1: Fill the Cold Water Reservoir with 10 oz. of undiluted white vinegar to the 10 oz. mark on the Water Level Guide.
Step 2: Place the ceramic mug on the Drip Tray Plate. Lift and lower the Brewer Handle completely and perform a brew without adding a K-Cup. Empty the contents of the ceramic mug into the sink.
CAUTION: Be careful as contents will be hot.
Step 3: Place the ceramic mug back on the Drip Tray Plate. Pour the remaining 10 oz. of vinegar into the Cold Water Reservoir. Start a brew, but power off the Brewer just after it starts to dispense. Allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes.
C. Rinse
Step 1: After the prescribed period of time (at least 30 minutes), turn your Brewer on and place the ceramic mug on the Drip Tray Plate. Lift and lower the Brewer Handle completely and perform a brew without adding a K-Cup. Empty the contents of the ceramic mug into the sink.
CAUTION: Be careful as contents will be hot.
Step 2: Fill the Cold Water Reservoir with 10 ounces of fresh water, place the ceramic mug on the Drip Tray Plate and perform a brew without adding a K-Cup.
Step 3: Repeat Step 2 three times to cleanse the Brewer plumbing and get rid of any residual taste from the vinegar. The Brewer is now ready for normal use again.
