We get a lot of questions about the run time (or battery life) of the Dyson cordless stick vacuums. This is understandable as the information is somewhat scattered and determining accurate figures is not an easy task. However this is essential data if you want to know which vacuum might best fit your cleaning needs. So we’ve put together tables and a video that highlight most of the important run time and suction power figures for the Dyson V10, the Dyson V8, the Dyson V7 and the Dyson V6.

Dyson V10/V8/V7/V6 – Run Times

The first table highlights the run times in the different power modes. The figures have been determined through a combination of discussions with the manufacturer’s customer service representatives, the manufacturer’s specifications in their product literature, and plenty of online research and digging. We call this the “Official” run time table.User
OFFICIAL RUN TIMES (MINUTES)
Dyson V6Dyson V7Dyson V8Dyson V10
LOW POWER Non-motorized tool20304060
LOW POWER Motorized tool16202535
MEDIUM POWER Non-motorized toolN/AN/AN/A30
MEDIUM POWER Motorized toolN/AN/AN/A20
MAX POWER All tools6676
In the table above you will notice that there are run time differences when you use a motorized tool and when you use a non-motorized tool. The motorized tools use up more battery power (there is actually a motor in the tool itself). As a result they drain the batter faster. Motorized tools would include the Direct Drive Cleaner Head, the Torque Drive Cleaner Head, the Soft Roller Cleaner Head and the Mini Motorhead Tool. Also, there is no Medium power mode for the V6, the V7, or the V8. This mode is only available on the Dyson V10. A slider on the top of the V10 handheld unit allows you to switch from Low to Medium to Max power modes (see image below).
On the V8 and V7 there is also a slider on the handheld unit but it only has Low and Max modes (image below - V7 is on the left).
The V6 has a button on the back on the handheld unit which when depressed alternates between Low and Max (image below).

Dyson V10/V8/V7/V6 – Suction Power

Now we will look at the suction power figures for the four different Dyson cordless models. The table below shows Air Watts (the unit Dyson uses to measure suction power) in each different power mode.
SUCTION POWER (AIR WATTS)
Dyson V6Dyson V7Dyson V8Dyson V10
LOW POWER28212815.8
MEDIUM POWERN/AN/AN/A33.8
MAX POWER100100115151
The above table, when combined with the run time table, provides some very interesting insights into the Dyson stick vacs. We can see from a run time perspective that the V7 appears to be a step up from the V6 – the V7 provides 20 minutes of run time while the V6 provides 16 minutes. But upon checking the battery specifications between the V6 and the V7 we note that they are essentially the same (6-cell Lithium Ion Battery Pack, 21.6 V, 16.2 A, 2100 mAh, 46 Wh). So how is Dyson doing this? When we look at the Suction Power table above we can see that the suction power (in Low power mode) of the V7 is actually lower than the V6. So Dyson has created the V7 to have a longer run time at the expense of its suction power.
Now when we get to the V8 you can see that it retains the suction power (in Low power mode) of the V6 while possessing a run time that is longer than both the V6 and the V7. How is this possible? Dyson has added a larger battery to the V8 (6-cell Lithium Ion Battery Pack, 21.6 V, 18.5 A, 2800 mAh, 65 Wh). But as a result the V8 is also heavier than the V6 and the V7, and it has a longer battery recharge time (5 hours as opposed to 3.5 hours). So there is some trade-off.
In terms of raw power you have to give that to the V10. In Max power mode the V10 is pumping out 151 Air Watts of suction. This is 31% more power than the V8 and 51% more power than the V6 and V7. Despite this power output, the V10 battery also charges faster than the V8. The V10 takes 3.5 hours to fully charge, while the V8 takes 5 hours.

Dyson V10/V8/V7/V6 - Tested Run Times

A run time test is a fairly easy test to do provided you have all of the different Dyson cordless vacuums which we do. We decided to test the battery life of each vacuum in what we believe is the most common configuration – using a powered cleaner head in low power mode. We ensured that each machine was fully charged, that the dust canister was empty, and that the filters were clean. We then depressed the trigger and ran the vacuum on carpet until it stopped. The run time was recorded with a stop watch. The following table shows the results:
TESTED RUN TIMES (MINUTES)

Dyson V6Dyson V7Dyson V8Dyson V10
LOW POWER Motorized tool16 min 40 sec23 min 28 sec27 min 28 sec40 min 17 sec
MEDIUM POWER Motorized toolN/AN/AN/A20 min 23 sec
MAX POWER All tools6 min 26 sec6 min 22 sec7 min 45 sec7 min 14 sec
Probably the most remarkable thing about all of these tests is that in every single case the tested run time was longer than the “Official” run time. We were also impressed with the V10 which got over 40 minutes or run time in Low power mode.
It should probably be noted here that we did not test the suction power. This is not easy due to the way in which the vacuums are manufactured. Without suction power tests one doesn’t know if the vacuums are simply producing longer run times because we are being short changed on the suction. Or perhaps suction is decreasing as the run time increases. These things are unknowns. However, if Dyson is delivering on the suction then we would say that it is nice to see a manufacturer creating a product with better specs (run times in this case) than stated.
